Linux Debian Project Has New Leader

After several weeks of voting and polling the Linux Debian Developer community has found their new leader, Anthony Towns. Towns, who is also the secretary industry body Linux Australlia, will take the post for a year on April 17th. Towns said that he will help Debian “increase its tempo” and told ZDNET in an interview that the biggest challenge will be coordinating Debian’s ongoing development.

AMD Revenue UP

AMD is reporting practically double in this quarter than they did last year. First quarter earnings were $1.33 billion compared to $780 million last year at the same time.

IE Critical Patch

Microsoft released the “Mega Critical Patch” that fixes up 10 problems in IE (Internet Exploror). Two such problems fixed are a important problem in Outlook and a moderate problem in a component of Frontpage and Sharepoint.

Myspace Hires Chief Security Officer

Myspace.com has hired Hemanshu (Hemu) Nigam, a former Justice Department Prosecutor who specialized in child exploitation cases. Now that parents want their kids profiles deleted Myspace.com is starting to spiff its security to a higher level hoping that it will sway people’s thoughts about their site.

Apple-New Remote Desktop Released

Apple has released its 3rd generation of the Remote Desktop. The award winning desktop management software has 50 new features including lighting fast Spotlight searches and 30 Automator actions.

Fujitsu To Release Blu-Ray PCs

Fujitsu is set to release the world’s first PC with a Blu-Ray drive in Japan in late June. The price is announced to be about $5,000.

Quote from the CNET article:

The new desktop PC from Fujitsu comes with a 37-inch LCD screen and is expected to sell for around $5,000 (600,000 yen), a Fujitsu representative said.

Fujitsu is also set to release a notebook, like their counterpart Toshiba, with a HD DVD drive. The price is supposed to be around $3,360, similar to Toshiba’s.

Skype Aquires Sonorit

Skype announced today that they will be aquiring a smaller VoIP (voice over IP) startup program called Sonorit for $27 million. One of the reasons Skype made the decision was because of Sonorit’s engineering team which can help further advance Skype’s VoIP technology. In the deal Skype will also aquire one of Sonorit’s subiserys, Camino Networks.

Red Hat Aquires JBOSS

Linux Distributor Red Hat, announced that they will aquire JBOSS for at least $350 million. JBOSS, an open-source Java application is expected to help Red Hat’s growth and potential. Expect the deal to close at the end of next month.
